Janet Frank


NSO cellist Janet Frank, a native of Washington, DC, began cello in the DC Public School System. She began studying privately with Dorothy Jarvinen and continued her studies through high school with former NSO Principal Cellist John Martin. Also, while in high school she made a cello in Willis Gault's violin shop.  She received a B.A. from Barnard College in New York, where she studied cello with Bernard Greenhouse. While still in college, she played in Leopold Stokowski's American Symphony Orchestra.

 

 Janet is also a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique and has taught Alexander classes all over the United States.    She also has devised and performed music programs in public and private schools since 1992. She has written on music related subjects; two of her articles, “When Maestros Were Maestros”, about her time with Stokowski and “Syncopated Clock, Indeed!”, about Leroy Anderson, have appeared in The American Scholar, the journal of the Phi Beta Kappa Society.

 

She holds a private pilot license,  single engine land and glider.  Her dog is named Miss Raya Garbousova but people call the dog just, "Raya".
