Musical Conversations: A one of a kind concert featuring electric/acoustic cellist Vasily Popov on the five-string cello with jazz violinist Eddie Drennon and jazz pianist Bob Sykes. The three Levine faculty-artists collaborate on a mix of jazz classics, original pieces and arrangements.

Kennedy Center Terrace Theater

Israeli cellist Amit Peled with pianist Eli Kalman in a program sponsored by the Washington Performing Arts Society's Kreeger String Series. They play Beethoven's 3rd sonata, Britten's 3rd sonata, Schumann's Fantasiestucke, and works by Eccles and Tsintsadze. Peled plays on a Guarnari instrument.

Kennedy Center Concert Hall

"A Tribute to the Pablo Casals Concert in the Kennedy White House." Yo Yo Ma and pianist Emanuel Ax join the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson trio in a event commemorating the 50th anniversary of Casals' historic White House concert. The artists recreate the 1961 program, which featured the 3rd Beethoven sonata, works for cello and piano by Couperin and Schumann, Mendelssohn's first piano trio by Mendelssohn, and the Catalan Song of the Birds, with which Casals closed his concerts after his self-imposed exile from fascist Spain.

Dahlgren Chapel, Georgetown University

John Moran, classical cello, and Dongsok Shin, fortepiano will perform a program of J.S. Bach’s Suite No. 3 in C major for violoncello solo (BWV 1009), arranged for violoncello and piano by Robert Schumann; Preludes from The Well-Tempered Clavier with an additional part composed for the violoncello, op. 137a by Johann Sebastian Bach and Ignaz Moscheles; Sonata for Pianoforte and obbligato Violoncello in A major by Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach.  Admission is free.  More information can be found at http://performingarts.georgetown.edu/music/FridayMusicSeries/

Avant garde cellist Frances-Marie Uitti Solo Cello with Ayman Fanous Guitar in a program of music by Scelsi, Sciarrino, Kurtág, and Uitti (including Uitti's special technique of using two bows simultaneously).

Strathmore Mansion

Alisa Weilerstein, cello, will pair with Gabriel Kahane, singer/composer/pianist, in a program featuring Bach's Suite No. 5 and solo works by Kahane.  The concert ends with the Washington premiere of a new sonata created by Kahane for cello, piano and voice which draws on the poetry of the 20th century Polish poet Zbigniew Herbert.  Single tickets $28, available on 7/26/10.  www.strathmore.org, 301-581-5100.

Smithsonian Castle Commons

Kenneth Slowik, cellist, will complete the cycle of Bach suites that he began in November. He will play the suites in C major, D major, and d minor.  Tickets currently available only by series subscription.

Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, University of Maryland, College Park

Evelyn Elsing, cello, will perform with Edward Newman, piano, a faculty recital. Vasily Popov, cello, and Ralitza Patcheva, piano,  will play "Suite Italienne" (after 'Pulcinella').  This concert, a part of the city-wide festival The Stravinsky Project, features music originally written for ballet and will also feature the Apex Winds.  The concert precedes an afternoon symposium "Stravinsky and the Theater" (also free and open to the public from 2:30-5:30 p.m.) with Prof. Mitchell Morris (UCLA), Prof. Robynn Stilwell (Georgetown University), and Prof. Jann Pasler (UCSD) that looks at Stravinsky as a theatrical artist and his tradition of reusing old material – both his and others' – in inventive ways.  Free

Tanya Anisimova, cellist, and friends will present an interactive program “Seeing Music and Hearing Art.” They promise an unusual afternoon that will break down barriers, drawing the audience into the performance.
